We saved $500/month

Premise: Reduce a $500/month server bill.

  1. Sam: “I can cut $500/month.” ARM migration, reserved capacity, DB tuning, image compression.
  2. Sam: “One month of work.” The infrastructure is objectively leaner.
  3. Pat: “How much does one engineer-month cost?” The room becomes financially literate.
  4. Riley: “Break-even in 30 months. Assuming nothing changes.” Sam still feels extremely good about the graph.

Observed behavior: Saving money is not the same thing as creating value.

Cast: Sam Okafor — The Platform Builder — “Teams need a paved road.”; Pat Williams — The Enterprise Adult — “We need a supported solution.”; Riley Novak — The Minimalist — “Postgres, HTTP, cron.”
