This time we’ll do it properly

Premise: A critical dependency is old, weird and barely maintained.

  1. Chris: “We should own this critical path.” The dependency’s last release was three years ago.
  2. Alex: “A rewrite lets us fix the model instead of copying the mistakes.” The new architecture is genuinely beautiful.
  3. Jo: “The old one still works.” She closes another compatibility ticket.
  4. Six months later: Legacy: 94% of production traffic. Rewrite: 100% of the architecture documentation. Both are now critical systems.

Observed behavior: Legacy code is code that survived contact with reality.

Cast: Chris Dubois — The Sovereign — “If we can’t fork it, we don’t own it.”; Alex Chen — The Architect — “We should solve the general case.”; Jo Ramirez — The Cowboy — “Ship it. We’ll know if it matters.”
