What should we track?

What should we track?“Track everything now. You can't backfill a question later.”Greg Hollis, The Hedger

💡 WHY GREG IS RIGHT

Logging is the one decision that is not reversible in the useful direction: you can always delete data, but you can never recover behavior you did not record. A question that matters next year will be about this year. Capturing events broadly, with sensible retention, keeps every future analysis possible, at a storage cost that is usually trivial next to the decision it might inform.

✅ RIGHT WHEN

Events are anonymous, retention is set, and the product is still finding its shape.

🚩 TOO FAR WHEN

Nobody can delete an event because someone might need it, and it has been five years.
