What should we track?

What should we track?“Nothing yet. Ship it, then add the event we wish we had.”Jo Ramirez, The Cowboy

💡 WHY JO IS RIGHT

Before launch, nobody knows which question will matter, so most events are guesses with a maintenance cost. Server logs and the database already record what happened. Ship the feature, watch real usage, and when a concrete question shows up, add the one event that answers it. A week of data you actually need beats a year of data collected just in case. Production will tell you what to measure.

✅ RIGHT WHEN

Early product, fast deploys, and adding an event takes minutes.

🚩 TOO FAR WHEN

The question is about last month, and the event that would answer it ships next Tuesday.
