What should we track?

What should we track?“We have 412 events. Which ones did anyone open this year?”Ruth Lindqvist, The Maintainer

💡 WHY RUTH IS RIGHT

She has migrated analytics vendors three times, and each migration produced the same discovery: most tracked events had never been queried once. Events accumulate like log lines, each added for a question someone had in a meeting, and nobody removes them because nobody knows who needs them. Before adding the 413th, find out which of the existing ones answer anything. The cheapest analytics improvement is usually a deletion.

✅ RIGHT WHEN

A tracking plan has grown for years and nobody can say what half of it is for.

🚩 TOO FAR WHEN

The audit of old events takes a quarter and blocks the one new event the team needs.
